These new laws make New York the first state to have legislation regarding social media algorithms in response to concerns about addictive features on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. The bills require social media platforms to display content chronologically by default for users under 18 and restrict websites from collecting or sharing personal data from users under 18 without consent. Additionally, platforms must limit late-night app notifications that can disrupt sleep. Despite some opposition, New York officials emphasize the importance of protecting young users from harm and addictive forces. Similar legislation has been pursued in other states, with courts often scrutinizing its constitutionality.
